Future Meeting Plans

2021

  1. Serial virtual talks ‘Road to International Cave and Karst Year 2021’. Held on March up to June 2021

The meeting will invite steering committee members and partners to promote better cave and karst protection and management. Among the theme will be scheduled are:

  • Disseminate and discussion on new-published Guidelines for Geo-conservation in Protected and Conserved Areas published by IUCN. The guideline was prepared by Cave and Karst Working Group IUCN where some members are former and present KC-IGU steering committee.

  • Disseminate and discussion on revised Guidelines for Cave and Karst Protection. The book is prepared by Prof. Dr David Gilliesson, one of KC-IGU steering committee from   School of Geography, Faculty of Science The University of Melbourne.

  • Sharing best practices on karst management by Steering Members and other corresponding members

   2. Karst session on 34th International Geographical Congress 2021, 16-20 August, Turkey.

KC-IGU will host two topics:

  • Global Karst Critical Zone (KCZ) chaired by Prof. Dr Jianhua Cao from the International Research Centre on Karst, China. The session will discuss Karst Critical Zone's nature that is the most susceptible to environmental change and disturbances.  The discussion seeks to have a better understanding of KCZ to anticipate and mitigate karst environmental deterioration.

  • Land Use Planning in Karst Region, Chaired by Dr Eko Haryono from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. The session invites karst scientist to share and discuss best practice on karst zonation for better karst management.

   3. 28th International Karstological School "Classical Karst" (Postojna, June 14th–18th 2021)

  • 28th International Karstological School will be focused on regional karst studies. Karst is distributed in most continents and climatic regimes. Most of what we know on karst is based on regional studies. These have direct implications in a particular region; however, their broader relevance and validity of regional results may be questionable. Results of regional studies, thus, may or may not be generally valid. Regardless of your topic (geomorphology, geology, hydrology, biology, speleology, …), we encourage you to present your regional study and discuss its results because of their relevance to other karst systems.

  • Dr Travassos, from the karst commission, will be an invited speaker talking about tropical karst, with selected examples from Brazil.

   4. 18th International Congress of Speleology, 21-31 July, Lion France.

  • The International Cave and Karst Year (ICKY 2021) will be inaugurated in the conference. KC-IGU is one of the patronages in the initiation of ICKY-2021. The  ICKY 2021 will be launched on the 29th of January 2021. KC-IGU will contribute a serial activity heading to a conference in Jully.

   5. 1st International Webinar of the Kartology Study Group from PUC Minas, Brazil.

  • The International Cave and Karst Year (ICKY 2021) is the guideline for this series of lectures made by Brazilian and International scientists dedicated to karst and cave studies.

6. Workshop "Advances in Geoinformatics: Methods, Techniques and Applications"

  • Organized by the Department of Geography, Gauhati University, sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology of India from 4th October to 10th October.

  • The inaugural programme of the workshop will start at 11 AM (Indian Standard Time) on 4th October on Zoom Platform. The honourable Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University will attend the programme as Inaugurator.
